Week 4. Segment 2: Introduction to assemblies and assembly constraints

During this segment we will introduce assemblies and assembly constraints
Goals:
  • Understand what an assembly is
  • Learn to properly apply constraints between parts within an assembly
Materials for this segment:
  • Please watch the video on the right prior to class.
  • Use the built in tutorials in Inventor to learn more about assemblies.

Deliverable 1 is due (2% of the grade). For this deliverable you will design your first part in Inventor (or other CAD software of your choice). Your task is to develop a part that encloses/holds a major component of the Arduino Kit that is part of your course kit (Servo, stepper motor, LCD display, 8x8 display etc...you select your favorite part). Find and download a model of the Arduino kit part, and then design an enclosure 'around' it.

Items to be submitted:

1) A STEP file of the part together with the Arduino kit component model. STEP files can be read by most CAD packages, i.e. I can look at your part in Inventor, even if you designed it in Solidworks or another CAD package.

2) A short 20-30sec video that shows your printed part with the ARduino Kit component fitted. Just rotate the assembly in front of the camera and upload as mp4.

Support: Watch this video before setting out to do the Deliverable. If you have no experience with CAD software this video will show you how to go about it in Inventor. It demonstrates how to do the deliverable by the example of the servo that is part of the kit.

Grading: For getting 100 pts...
...the chosen kit component must fit the designed part perfectly and the part needs to look good.

Late submissions:
  • 10 pts penalty for being up to 60 min late.
  • 20 pts penalty for being up to 24 hrs late
  • Submissions later than 1 day will not be accepted (0 pts)
This is the video for Deliverable 1. It shows how to design feature that holds the servo that is part of the Arduino kit.
